All by April: A Call to Action
to Support our Elections

Nonpartisan, nonprofit organizations are a cornerstone of our democracy and play a critical role in ensuring that our elections are free, fair, and representative. These civic groups work to reduce barriers to voting, combat misinformation, recruit poll workers, and protect the rights of Americans throughout the election process to ensure our diverse electorate is fully represented. These dedicated pro-democracy organizations connect voters to the ballot and help protect the integrity of our election system. They are standing up for our elections, and they need philanthropy to stand with them.

Our elections, and those who protect them, are under enormous strain. This is particularly true for smaller, grassroots organizations and for groups serving communities of color and immigrant communities. Under these threats, Americans could lose the promise of a functioning democracy. Funders must take every action possible to prevent further erosion of the norms, practices, and everyday actions that make our democracy work.

We know the challenges–old and new–that face our partners in the field. We know that when we move more resources early and quickly, those partners are better able to support free and fair elections.

Democracy can’t wait, and neither can those defending it.

The All by April campaign invites funders across philanthropy – foundations, individual donors, donor advisors, pooled funds, donor networks, and other philanthropic professionals – to take part in a shared effort to strengthen democracy by acting early. Reviewing your election-related gifts, move faster wherever possible, and encourage others to do the same.

Acting early can look like:

  • Making all or most election-related funding commitments by April.
  • Equipping organizations with resources faster by making early payments and moving up existing commitments by April.
  • Reducing the burden on organizations by streamlining grant application and renewal processes.
  • Empowering organizations to respond to the moment by providing general support funds, including multi-year resources whenever possible.
  • Trusting pro-democracy allies and field leaders to identify urgent needs.

Early resources are essential for groups on the ground. It allows organizations to plan confidently, build coalitions instead of competing for resources, train staff early, and adapt to new challenges. It also positions groups to counter abuses before they occur and to be first out of the gate when litigation is needed.

Philanthropy’s funding practices are a significant barrier to early field readiness. In 2024, All by April showed what’s possible when funders act quickly – but also how much more is needed. Nearly half of organizations surveyed as a part of the campaign said they received more funding earlier in 2024 than in previous cycles, but nearly 75% still didn't have enough funds by April to plan their election work for the rest of the year.

That’s why the campaign is returning with an open call to philanthropy: let’s start earlier this time. The goal is simple – move all we can by the end of April.

We invite all 501c3 funders to take part. Provide early support to the organizations that help uphold, revitalize, and reimagine our democracy. Move election funds faster wherever possible and encourage your networks to do the same. Our grantees and our democracy will be stronger for it.
